Associate Chaplain

The Associate Chaplain will be part of the Spiritual Life and Service team which seeks to provide comprehensive spiritual care and support for the students, faculty, staff and families of the Episcopal School of Jacksonville community. Duties will include teaching, pastoral care, planning and leading worship, and supporting a culture of service/service learning.


  • Degree required
    • M.Div preferred
      • Equivalent degree in theology, Biblical or religious studies
    • Ordination in the Episcopal Church
      • May consider ordination in another denomination
    • Teaching experience with youth in a school or church setting
    • Pastoral Care experience
      • Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Organize and lead service opportunities for middle school and upper school
  • Work with students to match interests and passions with service opportunities
  • Assist in planning and leading the annual Celebrating Service Day
  • Use service tracking platform to track student hours and to communicate service opportunities
  • Assist with service and mission trip opportunities
  • Develop and implement new service opportunities which encourage students “to be leaders and doers of good”
  • Assist in developing a culture of service to others


  • Teach 2-3 classes per semester
    • Middle school Bible classes
    • Upper school Theology classes
  • Guest teacher or discussion leader when invited by teachers of various disciplines
  • Fill in when needed in the Theology department

Pastoral Care

  • Ministry of presence
    • Be visible and available at various times and places during the school day as well as other school sponsored events and activities
  • Provide confidential spiritual support and guidance for students, faculty, and staff

Worship/ Chapel

  • Works with chaplain and vestry to plan and lead weekly chapel services
  • Collaborate with chaplain and vestry to seek ways to engage students in chapel
  • Creatively worship in the Episcopal tradition
  • Explore novel and interactive means of worship while maintaining our Episcopal identity
  • Empower and support students to lead worship
  • Seek ways to engage more student, faculty and staff to participate in weekly worship
  • Develop and implement new ideas, activities, and worship experiences into the chapel program

Spiritual Life

  • Support student initiatives which enhance the spiritual life of the school
  • Initiate creative ways to support and enhance the spiritual life of the school
  • Facilitate student groups and faculty/staff groups for prayer, Bible study, and spiritual growth opportunities
  • Maintain Episcopal identity
  • Welcome and include ALL persons in our community
  • Uphold “Respect the dignity of Every Human Being”
  • Facilitate civil discourse opportunities regarding divisive issues within our culture and the school community
  • Encourage opportunities to pray and lead prayer
