St. Andrew's-Sewanee School seeks candidates for the Chaplain Fellowship, a one-year fellowship program giving those interested in school chaplaincy the opportunity to preach, teach, and offer pastoral care to a boarding and day school community. The Chaplain Fellow will work closely with the Chaplain to inspire, guide, and support the spiritual life of St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School.


Named one of the eight most beautiful high schools in the South by Southern Living magazine, St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School (www.sasweb.org) is a private, co-educational, Episcopal, day and boarding college-preparatory school serving 250 students in grades 6-12. We challenge our students to fulfill their greatest potential while helping them to cultivate lives of balance and joy. With more than 150 years of tradition of serving students from diverse backgrounds, the school is poised to enhance the many ways students learn, live, and play in community. St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School recently completed a strategic-plan, a campus master plan, and is in the early stages of an ambitious capital campaign.


This fellowship is a 10-month, full time position and reports to the Chaplain.

The Chaplain Fellow will:

  • Help lead the liturgical life of the community
  • Inspire and coordinate faculty and student participation in worship by recruiting and training servant leaders as acolytes, readers, chalice bearers
  • Help guide the school in maintaining and communicating its Episcopal identity
  • Orient new students and faculty to the liturgy of the Episcopal Church
  • Teach an academic religion course
  • Sponsor and/or assist with two afternoon programs throughout the academic year
  • Perform weekend and night responsibilities to support the life of the residential community as assigned
  • Assist in pastoral care for students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Participate in all aspects of campus life
  • Assist in the care of the school’s historic St. Andrew’s Chapel
  • Participate in the life of the Diocese and wider church
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the Head of School

The Chaplain Fellow serves as a student advisor, is part of a weekend team, and helps plan and execute class trips, retreats, and special events throughout the year.


Applicants must have completed a Master of Divinity Degree. Preference will be given to candidates (i) ordained in the Episcopal church and/or familiar with its theology, tradition, and worship, and/or (ii) candidates with experience living or working in a boarding school. Candidates will be expected to have experience working with adolescents.


The Chaplain Fellow will work under the close guidance of a faculty mentor and receive a stipend, housing (including utilities and basic cable), meals when school is in session, health and dental insurance, worker’s compensation, short-term and long-term disability, group life insurance, defined contribution retirement plan.
