DESCRIPTION: St. Pauls School announces a search for a Dean of Equity and Inclusion to begin  duties in August 2019. The Dean reports to the Vice Rector for School Life, is a member of the Schools administrative team, and will provide focused, strategic leadership to sustain and strengthen current diversity initiatives and to develop thoughtful, innovative school-wide practices and programs in the areas of equity and inclusion.  The Dean of Equity and Inclusion will work collaboratively to design and lead meetings and workshops for students, faculty, administrators, parents, and alumni to create an awareness of elements that unify and challenge communities and promote growth and understanding.  The Dean will work closely with the Vice Rector for School Life, the Vice Rector for Faculty, the Dean of Students, the Dean of Studies, and the Associate Dean of Students for Equity and Inclusion to promote, expand, and strengthen the diverse and inclusive community of St. Pauls School.


St. Pauls School is a completely residential, co-educational secondary school affiliated with the Episcopal Church and welcoming of all faiths.  Located a little over an hour’s drive north of Boston, St. Pauls aggressively seeks applications from candidates who will promote the Schools commitment to attracting and retaining a highly talented and diverse faculty.  A successful candidate will embrace the schools residential living experience and have a demonstrated gift for engaging a diverse student body and strengthening St. Pauls inclusive community.


  • In partnership with the Rector and administrative team, advance the ongoing strategic initiative and commitment to lead the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and programs that sustain and further develop a diverse, equitable, and inclusive school community
  • Assist the Vice Rector for Faculty and the Hiring Committee in recruiting, hiring, and mentoring faculty and professional staff, who reflect and support a diverse and inclusive school community
  • Promote retention of a diverse faculty through mentoring, support-structures, and opportunitiefor community-building and engagement
  • Support and collaborate with the Vice Rector for School Life, the Vice Rector for Faculty, the Dean of Studies and department chairs to ensure that the schools curriculum and instruction delivers culturally aware and anti-bias content and culturally responsive pedagogy
  • In partnership with the Vice Rector for School Life, support and implement a mission-alignevision for community experiences related to multiculturalism, diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Support and mentor the efforts of the Associate Dean of Students for Equity and Inclusion in leading and growing cross-cultural and identity-based student affinity groups for all students and programming for new students.
  • Assist the Vice Rector for Faculty and Human Resources Director in current and ongoing administrative, faculty and staff professional development opportunities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Partner with the administration to develop policies and programs that deliver equity and fosteinclusivity for all members of the community
  • Serve as a resource and leader for the community with matters of diversity, equity, inclusion, and multicultural practices and communication
  • Support the Admissions Office in recruitment efforts and practices to create a diverse and inclusive student body
  • Partners with the Office for Alumni Engagement to extend outreach to a diverse alumni community
  • In addition to administrative responsibilities, administrators at St. Pauls School are responsible for a variety of activities typical for a boarding school, including student advising, dormitory association, extra-curricular advising or coaching, and committee work.


Education and Experience:  Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree (or higher) preferred, and a minimum of five years of administrative experience leading diversity, equity and inclusion work at the secondary level.  As part of a residential boarding school, the candidate must be committed to working and living with adolescents and supporting their academic, social, and emotional growth.  The successful candidate will also demonstrate a broad range of experience relevant to this position, including:


  • Participation in in-depth training in diversity, inclusion and multicultural practices at nationally recognized seminars and workshops
  • Independent school experience
  • Strategic thinking skills with a record of accomplishment in the implementation of effective and sustainable academic and affective programs in diversity, equity, and inclusion in school settings
  • Community building skill set and the capacity and interest to work with a broad spectrum of learners to build cross-cultural competency in all constituencies — students, faculty, staff, trustees, and parents
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, allowing one to work effectively with colleagues, parents, and students
  • Capacity to facilitate conversations, mediate conflicts and represent the school in the larger community
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and experience leading diversity and inclusion trainings and developing cross-cultural skills in others
  • Strong organizational skills needed to interface with several academic and non-academic departments
  • Capacity to enjoy working with colleagues and young people in a boarding school environment
  • A sense of humor and a growth mindset
