The Episcopal School of Los Angeles History Department is seeking a teacher with an unshakable commitment to student success; whose classroom is filled with surprise and delight.

The ideal candidate has:

  • An abiding passion and deep knowledge of working with a diverse student body,

  • Experience designing innovative curricula in their discipline,

  • Leveraged technology to enhance student achievements,

  • Expertise in differentiating instruction for a heterogeneous study body,

  • Demonstrated success in the classroom with different adolescent needs across grades 6-12.

The ideal candidate is passionate about the study of history, eager to teach both middle school and upper school students, and interested in contributing to the culture of a school that values social justice, academic rigor, and the joy of community. The ideal candidate should desire not only to teach students, but also to learn from and grow with students and colleagues.

About the Department

ESLA’s History Department contributes to ESLA’s greater mission by fostering metacognition, self-understanding, historical empathy, and interpretive sophistication in its students. Emphasizing discussion and debate, writing and reflection, and independent research, the department’s curriculum encourages students to explore, critique, and contribute to standard narratives about histories both foreign and familiar. The department’s core courses and more specialized electives increase students’ subject knowledge within the context of broader questions about the relations between self and society, mind and matter, agency and power, and morality and sovereignty.

Upon graduating from ESLA, the history student will possess research and writing skills; facility with contemporary historical narratives and the ability to think beyond them; deeper understanding of the origins of difference, inequality, and injustice; a greater capacity for examining one’s assumptions and assessing the implications of one’s actions; and the ability to educate oneself, to complete self-directed projects, and to distinguish between the reasonable and unreasonable claims of others.


  • Teach five sections of history, to include:
  • Two or three sections of 7th and/or 8th grade
  • Two sections of 9th and/or 10th grade
  • Preparation of course materials, working from existing curricular frameworks, texts, and assessments.
  • Teach academic skills such as writing, organization, critical thinking, and critical reading.
  • Partner with Department colleagues to oversee the Writing Center (after-school tutoring support) one or two days a week (3:30-5:30 p.m.).
  • Advisor to small group of Middle or Upper School students.
  • Willingness to participate in at least one additional aspect of the school's extracurricular life for at least one semester (sports, club, performing arts, etc.).


All or most of the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in History, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, or related field of study.

  • Preferred 3+ years of teaching experience in public, charter, and/or independent schools, preferably in an urban context.

  • Experience designing curriculum for middle school and high school.

  • A desire to work in a creative, collaborative, innovative environment.

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.

  • A positive attitude, healthy priorities, and a sense of perspective about what really matters in secondary education.

  • Candidates will preferably have a CA teaching credential or masters degree in secondary education.
