St. Paul’s Episcopal School, located across from Lake Merritt in Oakland, enrolls 380 students from diverse backgrounds in Kindergarten-Grade 8.  St. Paul’s seeks to fill the Middle School Humanities Teacher position, for the 2019 - 2020 academic year, with an experienced, dynamic individual who:

 

  • Has experience teaching developmentally appropriate literature, grammar, and writing integrated with a social studies, history/ humanities curriculum
  • has a deep interest and passion for teaching History and Social Studies, (experience teaching US History a preference but not a requirement)   
  • can provide opportunities for language expression in a variety of forms,
  • can develop writing fluency, with grammar, structure and writing mechanics as on-going part of instruction,
  • can give students skills needed for reading analysis,
  • can create a developmentally appropriate cooperative learning environment
  • can expose students to a multicultural perspective of universal human experience,
  • has interest and/or experience integrating service learning into the curriculum,
  • has interest and experience teaching social emotional curriculum to middle school students
  • has an understanding of middle school students and enjoys working with them
  • has excellent communication skills with both children and adults,
  • has experience collaborating with a team of teachers to deliver curriculum
  • values collegiality with other teachers and administrators,
  • has a warm and energetic personality and a good sense of humor.
  • has experience working in a private/independent school setting (preferred)
  • has attained a BA degree (mandatory) and credential (preferred)
  • has 3-5 years experience teaching middle school History, Social Studies or Humanities

The Humanities teacher will work closely with the overall Middle School team. The students are supported by specialists in physical education, music, computers, Spanish, and art.
