St. John’s Episcopal School, celebrating 57 years in Olney, Maryland, is seeking a full-time, middle school language arts teacher for the 2019-2020 school year. St. John’s is distinguished as a successful and challenging Pre-K through 8 school with an accelerated academic program. Summary Description:

The successful applicant possesses a thorough understanding of adolescent development. The candidate will be able to plan and provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences for middle school students that are conducive to their intellectual, physical, social and emotional development. The applicant must be skilled in classroom differentiation and be able to develop, select, and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Must monitor and evaluate student outcomes through a variety of assessment techniques, maintain appropriate records, and follow required procedures and practices. The candidate must be a strong communicator, both orally and in writing, and be able to interact effectively with adolescent students, parents, staff, and community. The candidate must also participate fully in the life of the school, in terms of curricular work and in community activities and functions.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; elementary education or secondary degree with emphasis in English; advanced degree preferred

Years of Experience: 

  • 2 - 5 years full time teaching experience in related content field preferred

Specific Skills:

  • Thoroughly understands language arts curriculum and best instructional practices for teaching literature and grammar
  • Has a strong understanding of language syntax and the conventions of grammar
  • Can effectively design and implement literature based units for middle school students
  • Uses a variety of teaching strategies, effective lesson planning, and classroom management techniques
  • Is able to plan, deliver, and develop cross curricular units of instruction where appropriate
  • Competently infuses technology into the curriculum
  • Skilled in working collaboratively with fellow faculty members

 Knowledge, Skills and General Abilities:

  •  Has a current and comprehensive knowledge of instructional area, a variety of teaching strategies, effective lesson planning, and classroom management techniques
  • Has a general knowledge of curriculum development
  • Philosophically aligned with the mission of the school
  • Proficient with Google Docs, Google Apps for Education, Microsoft Word,
    e-mail, internet searches, and social media

Cognitive Abilities:

  • Reads periodicals, manuals, resource materials, and professional reports from a variety of disciplines
  • Writes professional reports and letters using proper formats, grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Speaks clearly and distinctly to a variety of audiences on the topics related to the instructional program
