St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School seeks a school counselor with a commitment to boarding and day school education in a diverse and welcoming Episcopal environment. The counselor provides supportive counseling, referring specialized care as needed to local clinicians. This person will collaborate with the school’s Dean of Students, Chaplain, Residential Life Coordinator, and Health Clinic staff to provide mental wellness programming for students in grades 6-12 and provide guidance to faculty and staff.

This is 10-month, full time residential position and reports to the Dean of Students. Outstanding candidates will be self-directed, possess exceptional rapport-building skills, have a generally upbeat and enthusiastic disposition, and enjoy working with adolescents and adults in fostering lives of challenge, balance, and joy.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate a positive and healthy school experience for all students.
  • Develop, implement, and support mental health and wellness programs in collaboration with the Dean of Students, Chaplain, Residential Life Coordinator and Health Clinic staff.
  • Provide direct services to students through programs, preventative activities, and individual and group counseling that include a variety of approaches from therapeutic to holistic wellness techniques.
  • Provide emergency and sustained counseling support to students as needed, including on-call support for students.
  • Proactively identify and address behavior problems that may be interfering with student well-being.
  • Participate in the community as an engaged and involved residential presence.
  • Work with colleagues to establish, maintain, and communicate mental health protocols.
  • Conduct faculty, staff, and student training on mental health, wellness, and abuse prevention.
  • Proactively communicate with parents regarding student well-being and counseling needs.
  • Establish a network of mental health professionals and refer students and their families to appropriate outside professionals for medical or social services, when necessary.
  • Maintain student records, confidential records, records of services provided, and behavioral data.
  • Support the Admission Office by reviewing student files and conducting conversations with outside mental health professionals as needed during the admission process.
  • Teach at least two courses or afternoon programs.
  • Perform weekend and night responsibilities to support the life of the residential community as assigned.

Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students or Head of School.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work
  • Appropriate licensure/certification as a counselor or therapist
  • 3-5 years minimum of relevant experience
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to caring for adolescents
  • Experience working with families from diverse backgrounds in a school counseling setting
  • Commitment to St. Andrew’s-Sewanee’s mission and vision and comfort with the tenets of the Episcopal Church
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with members of the SAS community
  • Strong work ethic, generous spirit, and excellent speaking and writing skills
  • Candidate must be willing to live on campus.
  • Applicants with boarding school experience and/or interest and experience in athletic coaching and/or outdoor education will be given special consideration.

COMPENSATION

This is a fulltime, 10-month position. Salary is dependent on education and experience. Campus housing will be provided. Benefits include a tuition remission plan, health and dental insurance, worker’s compensation, short-term and long-term disability, group life insurance, pension plan, and eligibility for grants for professional enrichment and continuing education. Vacation time includes academic year holidays/breaks and two months in the summer.
