The Episcopal Diocese of Haiti and Its Schools - Updated February 16, 2010

As widely reported, all Episcopal Church structures in Port-au-Prince and Léogâne were functionally destroyed in the January 12 earthquake. The Rt. Rev. Jean Zaché Duracin, Bishop of Haiti, remains in residence at an encampment on the soccer field adjacent to the College Ste. Pierre and Cathédrale Ste. Trinité in Port-au-Prince. Many victims have left areas directly affected by the earthquake to seek refuge in the countryside. The diocese of Haiti has now set up at least 21 refugee camps across the country, caring for more than 23,000 people.

The destruction of the Cathedral placed in immediate jeopardy the survival of its famous murals. Click here for a BBC News report on Haitian art and the Cathedral's murals.

Presiding Bishop Visits Haiti
On February 8, Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori visited Haiti and met with Bishop Duracin to discuss short-term and long-term plans for the diocese. In a February 10 interview with Episcopal News Service, the Presiding Bishop emphasized that country remains in an emergency-response phase, still struggling to meet basic needs. Rebuilding the diocese’s infrastructure and determining the priorities for rebuilding efforts remain in the future. She suggested that dioceses can “begin their own rebuilding funds with the trust that direction for how to use those funds is somewhere down the road. The priorities are going to come from the Diocese of Haiti—the priorities and the strategy—and it’s going to be some months before they begin to emerge.” She went on to say, “You can begin to challenge your parish and your diocese to begin to think about the longer-term rebuilding efforts. Collecting funds for that is probably the most appropriate thing to do.”

Schools Reported as Fully or Functionally Destroyed
This list of Episcopal schools reported as fully or functionally destroyed has been complied from reports published by Episcopal News Service and received from the Rev. Kesnar Ajax, executive director fo the Bishop Tharp Institute in Les Cayes, Haiti, and others.

How Can I Stay Informed About Conditions and Relief Efforts in Haiti?

The following websites provide the most timely and reliable information about conditions and efforts in Haiti, particularly as they relate to the Episcopal Church and its related organizations, including schools:

How Can Episcopal Schools Help?

Helping in the Next Three to Six Months
For the next three to six months, the best and most responsible way to help is to provide financial assistance to reputable relief organizations who know best the needs on the ground and have the professional skill to direct efforts where they are most needed. Episcopal Relief and Development has been identified by Bishop Duracin as the diocese of Haiti’s official partner agency in the diocese’s relief and recovery efforts. Contribute to ERD.

U.S.-Haiti Episcopal School Partnerships: Helping for the Long Term
Haiti’s needs will be long-term. In the months to come, we will be communicating with Episcopal schools about ways that they can support Haiti’s short-term and long-term rebuilding and recovery, including partnership opportunities. To have your school added to a list of those interested in sustained support and/or partnerships in Haiti, please e-mail the Rev. Roger Bowen or e-mail NAES.

Donations to Help Specific Schools
Gifts which donors or schools specifically want to support Episcopal schools in Haiti in general may be given through Children's Medical Mission of Haiti. This is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to providing medical and educational services to the people of Haiti through St. Vincent's Centre for the Handicapped, Port au Prince; Hospital Ste. Croix, Leogane; and all Episcopal schools in Haiti. Checks should be made payable to "Children's Medical Missions of Haiti," earmarked "Episcopal Schools" and sent to Kenneth Quigley, 925 Hertzler Road, Mechanicsville, PA 17055. These gifts will be held until the Diocese of Haiti is ready to receive them for rebuilding and for supporting our schools both in the damaged areas in and around Port-au-Prince and in the countryside where many people have fled.

Episcopal Schools Take Action to Help Haiti

Please keep NAES apprised of your school’s efforts to assist our brothers and sisters in Haiti by sending news, flyers, or other information to info@episcopalschools.org.

Many schools have raised funds for Episcopal Relief & Development, including:

St. Patrick’s Episcopal School, Washington, DC sponsored Jump for Haiti, a jump-rope-a-thon to support the school’s partner community of St. Etienne. Students jumped rope for 10 to 20 minutes during their physical education classes or recess. The school’s Haiti Partnership leader fielded questions and led discussion with classes in order to expand the students' understanding of this tragedy and life in Haiti more generally.

All Saints’ Episcopal Day School, Carmel, CA conducted a “read-a-thon” for Haiti and raised over $10,000 for ERD.

St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School, Thousand Oaks, CA prays aloud the children's prayers of Haiti each week in chapel.

St. Timothy’s Preparatory School, Apple Valley, CA moved the 6th Grade earthquake unit so that students could gain an understanding of the Haiti quake. The 3rd/4th Grade classes completed a coin drive.

St. Paul’s School, Concord, NH hosted Empty Bowl dinners whereby the normal school menu was replaced with rice and beans; money that would have normally been spent on feeding the community a full meal was donated to Haiti relief.

At Harvard-Westlake School, North Hollywood, CA, the Upper School raised over $4,000 for Partners in Health.

Seabury Hall, Makawao, HI raised $5,500 and growing for Physicians Without Borders. Fund raising efforts included a presentation by the students at morning assembly (music and power-point presentation) followed by collections, bake sales, shaved ice sales, a car wash and recycling day, a $100 plus matching challenge.

Preschoolers at St. Peter’s Episcopal Montessori School in Litchfield Park, AZ collected coins.
