Jones and Whitworth Join NAES Governing Board

At its April 2018 meeting, the Governing Board elected Canon A. Burns Jones and The Rev. Julia E. Whitworth to three-year terms on the Board, beginning July 1, 2018. Please join us in welcoming these outstanding individuals to their new leadership roles in NAES.

Meet Burns and Julia below!


Canon A. Burns Jones

Canon A. Burns Jones 100wBurns Jones serves as the Headmaster of Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco. Prior to this position, Burns served as Head of the Canterbury School in Greensboro, NC. He has held positions as English teacher, soccer coach, and Director of Advancement at Christ School in Asheville, NC, and as Middle School Director at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, SC. He currently serves on the Board of Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, NC and on the Executive Committee of the Elementary School Heads Association.

In 2013, Burns was awarded a Klingenstein Fellowship at Columbia University Teachers College. Burns holds a BA in English from Sewanee, an MA in English from Middlebury, and a JD from the University of South Carolina. Burns and his wife Elizabeth have two sons, who attend Cathedral School for Boys.


The Rev. Julia E. Whitworth

JuliaWhitworth 100wThe Reverend Julia E. Whitworth became the 12th rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in July, 2016 after serving as Canon for Liturgy and the Arts at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City. Passionate about liturgy and music, preaching, and the Church’s call to be a significant voice for social justice, Mother Julia is also deeply committed to the integration of children and families in all aspects of the Church, especially through education, worship, music, service, and joyful community-building. Her love for liturgy and the creative arts was forged in a career as a professional theatre director and theatre professor before ordination. She has taught at Vassar and Mount Holyoke College and New York University, from which she received an M.Phil. in Performance Studies. Her M.Div is from Union Theological Seminary in New York. Mother Julia is married to artist and theatre designer Ray Neufeld, with whom she shares three children—Liam, Gregory and Grace.
