With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Last year’s applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. Anticipated Base Compensation Depending on Experience: $95,000 – $110,000 per annum

Position Summary Description  

The Bishop’s School seeks a full-time Associate Director of DEIJ beginning August 2024.  The Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice (AD DEIJ) works in collaboration with the Director of DEIJ  to advance meaningful and intentional diversity, equity, inclusion and justice work in the school with a particular focus on the students in grades 6-8, their families and the faculty who teach them. The AD serves as an active member and co-lead of the DEIJ Leadership Team–which includes the director of DEIJ; the chaplain; and diversity coordinators – and supports the work advanced by the director of DEIJ, the associate head of school and head of school. The work of the associate director reflects the priorities of the School’s strategic plan, mission, vision, values and diversity statement. This is an in-person position.

Ideal Candidate Will Have 

  • A bachelor’s or more advanced degree;
  • A minimum of five years of relevant teaching and leadership experience in a school setting;
  • An unequivocal passion for working with adolescents and supporting them in all facets of their lives;
  • Demonstrated commitment and competency in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice;
  • Experience with curriculum planning and support of students in grades 6-8;
  • Training and experience promoting social-emotional learning and anti-bias praxis;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community;
  • Strong work ethic, time management, verbal, written language, and interpersonal skills;
  • Irrespective of own religious orientation, ability to support the School’s mission and values as a school founded in the Episcopal tradition;

Essential Functions and Specific Duties

  • Support the Director of DEIJ with strategic leadership in developing and implementing school-wide DEIJ strategy and accountability standard operating procedures.
  • Serve as point person to teachers, sponsors, and advisors, supporting them on DEIJ issues, focusing on grades 6-8 as they arise.
  • In collaboration with the Director of DEIJ, faculty, and relevant key partners, assess, support, and contribute to developing the grade 6-12 DEIJ Advisory curriculum.
  • In collaboration with the director of DEIJ, the associate dean of students, and the dean of faculty, the associate director may advise on student conduct and conflict resolution.
  • Advise and participate on a Grade Level Team.
  • Participate in Sponsors and/or Student Services meetings when appropriate and requested by the Dean or Associate Dean of Students.
  • Collaborate with the Director of DEIJ and the DEIJ Team to plan faculty professional growth opportunities.
  • Share with the Director of DEIJ in the interviewing of potential new faculty.
  • Assist the Director of DEIJ and Dean of Faculty in monitoring faculty DEI professional development.
  • Collaborate with the Director of DEIJ, faculty, staff, and students on community programming (i.e., assemblies, speakers, classroom and advisory activities, etc.) and to enhance the School’s efforts in global education.
  • Assist with organizing and leading student leader training in DEIJ competencies.
  • Partner with the Director of Admission and Financial Aid to recruit a diverse pool of applicants and successfully transition those students to Bishop’s.
  • The AD is required to stay abreast of new developments in the field by attending professional development opportunities and conferences as related to the field of DEIJ in K-12 education with focus on secondary education.
  • Organize and support student affinity groups and diversity clubs in grades 6-8.
  • Teach one section of an academic subject for the entire academic year.
