The St. Paul’s Schools is pleased to announce an opening for a full-time Chaplain and Religious Studies Teacher at St. Paul’s School for Girls for the 2021-2022 school year.

School Overview

The St. Paul’s Schools is a family of independent schools located in Brooklandville, Maryland. With more than 1,400 students from ages 6 months to grade 12, St. Paul’s Pre and Lower School (coed), St. Paul’s School for Girls, and St. Paul’s School for Boys share a 120-acre campus, an Episcopal affiliation, and a focus on developing confident, well balanced students who will use their education and ethics to improve the world. In July 2018, the schools unified under the umbrella of The St. Paul’s Schools, with a single board of trustees and one president, but each school retains its individual traditions and its gender-specific programs. A coordinated structure allows The St. Paul’s Schools to preserve the small-school feel within each school while sharing resources and certain programs to maximize opportunities for students. With St. Paul’s unique model, boys and girls are taught together and separately at just the right times in their development.

Specifically, St. Paul’s School for Girls has over 430 girls in grades 5-12.  St. Paul’s School for Girls educates hearts and minds in an inclusive community that is grounded in the Episcopal values of respect, integrity, and spiritual growth. We empower voice, nurture intellectual curiosity and creativity, and inspire confident leaders who serve in the world.

Position Description

Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Chaplain plays a vital role in the life of the SPSG community including leading weekly chapel services, teaching religious studies and overseeing our community service program.  In addition, the Chaplain at SPSG will team with the Chaplains at St. Paul’s School for Boys to provide a holistic and comprehensive spiritual approach to all students in grades preschool through 12th grade.

Major Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership to the school community regarding our Episcopal identity.
  • Prepares weekly chapels including liturgy, technology, music, student involvement, and speakers.
  • Coordinates worship services based on the needs of an interfaith community including Ash Wednesday, Hanukkah, Ramadan and other events.
  • Works with development office on dedications, special events, funerals, notes, etc.
  • Works with School Counselor in administering our wellness program and curriculum, and in supporting students in times of need
  • Works with Director of Diversity and Leadership Education on diversity curricula and initiatives.
  • Facilitate pastoral care and guidance for our students and families
  • Teaches religious studies classes and contributes to curriculum development
  • Works with Chaplains at St. Paul’s School for Boys to coordinate spiritual leadership and outreach to St. Paul’s Pre and Lower School (infant/toddler through 4th grade)
  • Provides spiritual and pastoral care to those in the school community with cards, visits, and meetings.
  • Serves on stewardship council and helps coordinate community service opportunities for students.
  • Teaches joint confirmation class with Chaplains at SP
  • Serves on appropriate committees including Administrative Leadership team.
  • Stays connected to the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland and keeps our school updated regarding all diocesan requirements and guidelines

Key Qualifications

  • Adeptness at relating religion to real-world examples and applications
  • Coordinate with academic divisions and serve as spirituality leader where appropriate
  • Facility with creating and implementing interdisciplinary lessons and partnering with other disciplines in such lessons, activities, and projects
  • Ability to differentiate teaching, lessons, and course content and willingness to work with learning services team to support students
  • Strong technology skills, including familiarity with tools that support learning and organization
  • Desire to collaborate with department, other faculty groups, and administrators to plan and implement departmental and school-wide goals
  • Enthusiasm for engaging fully in the life of the school, beyond classroom responsibilities
  • Preferred candidates will be ordained Episcopal priests with experience in school chaplaincy, teaching, and service learning.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated professionalism: ability to meet deadlines, lead initiatives, be proactive, and communicate with all constituencies of school community
  • Willingness and interest to participate in extra-curricular life of the girls and of the school
  • Candidates must have a Masters in Divinity or an equivalent degree and be able to demonstrate success in developing and implementing youth programs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and technology integration in the classroom and worship services required.

The Chaplain must have a passion for working with both children and adults.  They must demonstrate an understanding of and enthusiasm for Episcopal schools while at the same time, honor other faith traditions.  Experience as a school chaplain along with an ability to write, preach, and teach with clarity, insight, warmth and humor are important attributes of a successful candidate.  The Chaplain should be an exceptional communicator in all ways, have a high energy level, be well-respected, flexible, and of high integrity.

In addition to teaching, full-time faculty members serve as student advisors, mentor clubs, and contribute in other significant ways to the work of the community.  We are especially interested in candidates with coaching experience and/or those who can demonstrate initiative and serve as coaches in a variety of significant ways outside of the classroom.  Other supervisory responsibilities and duties are shared among faculty members.
