St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School seeks a dynamic Dean of Students with a commitment to boarding and day school education in a diverse and welcoming Episcopal environment. The Dean of Students provides leadership and guidance for all aspects of the student life experience. This is 12-month, full time, residential position and reports to the Head of School. The Dean of Students is a member of the Administrative Team. Outstanding candidates will be self-directed, possess exceptional rapport-building skills, have a generally upbeat and enthusiastic disposition, and enjoy working with other adults to encourage challenge, balance, and joy in the lives of adolescents.

Named one of the eight most beautiful high schools in the South by Southern Living magazine, St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School (www.sasweb.org) is a private, co-educational, Episcopal, day and boarding college-preparatory school serving 250 students in grades 6-12. Established in 1868, the school welcomes students from around the country and around the world. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Dean of Students will manage all aspects of the non-academic student experience for students in grades 6-12 and is expected to:

  • Facilitate a positive and healthy school experience for all students.
  • Develop school rules, expectations, and standards and ensure clear communication and consistent enforcement.
  • Model an engaged and involved residential presence.
  • Work with colleagues to establish, maintain, and communicate safety and security.
  • Oversee orientation activities, student life and leadership programs, coordinators, and budgets.
  • Proactively communicate with parents regarding student well-being.
  • Coordinate the Upper School advisory system.
  • Supervise the Director of the Health Clinic and serve as a member of the wellness committee to monitor and support student well-being.
  • Supervise, manage, and coordinate training and scheduling of transportation and bus services
  • Coordinate, supervise, and serve in the Administrator-On-Call (AOC) rotation.
  • Teach at least one course/equivalent.
  • Other duties as expected of faculty or as assigned by the Head of School.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Enthusiasm and commitment to caring for adolescents
  • Commitment to St. Andrew’s-Sewanee’s mission and vision and comfort with the tenets of the Episcopal Church
  • Experience living in a boarding school community
  • Minimum of a B.A. or B.S degree and/or advanced degree in a related field
  • Minimum of five years of demonstrated success as an educator
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with members of the SAS community
  • Ability to motivate and manage students and residential faculty
  • Strong work ethic, generous spirit, and excellent speaking and writing skills
  • Candidate must be willing to live on campus.

 

Applicants with counseling experience, interest, and experience in outdoor education, and/or the ability to coach a sport will be given special consideration.

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, 12-month position. Salary is dependent on education and experience. Campus housing will be provided. Benefits include a tuition remission plan, health and dental insurance, worker’s compensation, short-term and long-term disability, group life insurance, pension plan, and eligibility for grants for professional enrichment and continuing education. Vacation time includes academic year holidays/breaks and four weeks in the summer scheduled around school needs.
