About The Bishop’s School
Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, coeducational college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Last year’s applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. Anticipated Base Compensation: $130,000 – $170,000
Position Summary Description
Reporting to the Associate Head of School, the Director of DEIJ is a strategic thinker who leads the school’s efforts to enhance the sense of community and belonging by developing and implementing programming and policies that support school-wide efforts that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. This position will be instrumental in establishing DEIJ goals and metrics that are consistent with the School’s strategic plan, mission, vision, values and diversity statement. The Director sits on the senior administrative team and meets regularly with the Head of School.
Working in collaboration with key partners across teams and grades, the Director of DEIJ will establish consistent and comprehensive diversity programming and services, partnering with faculty, staff, parents, and other relevant partners to support the school’s DEIJ efforts. The successful candidate will have broad experience and a proven record of success in leading diversity efforts, particularly in a school environment. The candidate will be well versed on a range of models for building cultural competence within institutions and will be prepared to guide the community in developing the best model, introducing best practices for the school and its many stakeholders.
The Director of DEIJ will serve in a strategic role within the community to sustain and strengthen current diversity initiatives and develop mindful, innovative, school-wide programs that foster an inclusive school climate, cultivate multicultural competencies, and empower all members of the community to promote social justice.
An Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Bachelor’s Degree required and graduate degree(s) preferred;
- A minimum of eight years experience in education and/or working in a comparable academic position, preferably in a middle or high school environment;
- In-depth knowledge of current trends and thinking concerning DEIJ in educational settings;
- Experience planning, facilitating, and leading DEIJ training and education programs for students, educators and parents;
- A highly collaborative leadership style, with an ability to lead and inspire others;
- An unequivocal passion for working with adolescents and supporting them in all facets of their lives;
- Training and expertise in promoting DEIJ-based social-emotional learning with students, parents, and educators;
- A demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a range of constituencies;
- The ability to thoughtfully manage the complex dynamics related to advancing DEIJ programming in schools;
- Previous experience as an administrator.
