Evening Security Officer

St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School is currently accepting applications for the role of Security Officer. The successful candidate will provide support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for the security, safety and welfare of our students, faculty/staff, and guests while on school grounds; monitoring personnel and/or visitors; communicating information in response to inquiries; touring the assigned campus(s) to identify any irregularities (i.e., illegal entry, theft, fire, and vandalism); and enforcing campus rules and regulations set forth by the Head of School and its administration.

The Security Officer reports to the Director of Safety and Security

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proactively works with campus Division Directors, faculty and staff to continue to prioritize an understanding of safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to maintain a safe learning environment and the potential consequences of violation.
  • In partnership with school administration, serves as the initial first responder and school security coordinator to provide necessary assistance to students, faculty and staff during campus emergencies.
  • Establishes a professional, friendly and positive relationship with the faculty, staff and student body.
  • Directs and monitors emergency drills and emergency response.
  • Collaborates with public safety agencies (e.g., law enforcement, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fire, mental health, etc.) to serve as the liaison between the school and the community for the purpose of addressing individual cases and/or taking action regarding emergencies and criminal activities.
  • Conducts routine patrols of assigned campus facilities to include security building assessments, parking lots, and playgrounds for the purpose of providing visibility; physically check and secure doors, rooms, windows and gates to ensure they are properly secured; operate equipment to include alarm/lock down systems, and monitor close circuit television (CCTV) equipment when necessary.
  • Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot(s) during sporting, carpool and special events. This may include erecting barricades and setting traffic cones during school hours and special events.
  • Ensures all guests, vendors, and contractors have signed in through the Visitor Management System (VMS) located in front office, and are wearing their guest badges provided by the VMS.
  • Responds to a variety of situations (e.g., accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
  • Responds to inquiries from students and parents regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
  • Coordinates with law enforcement agencies regarding incidents involving local criminal activity that may impact the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff.
  • Maintains campus (student) Biometric scanner system for proper operation as well as adds and deletes individuals throughout the school year.
  • Inputs data entry into the SchoolDude maintenance work order system; records irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, property damage, malfunctioning machinery and equipment.
  • Attends designated seminars or webinars to reinforce training requirements and discuss current issues or trends with Security Director
  • Performs other related duties and assignment as required by school designated officials.

Qualifications / Experience:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibilities satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skills, and/or ability required: HS Diploma. Minimum of five years in an accredited law enforcement agency. Experience in community outreach and strong community engagement and interpersonal skills. The ability to obtain School Security Officer certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. The following skills and ability are preferred: Experience working in a school environment. Undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Experience working as a School Resource Officer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must be able to work flexible hours, evenings and staggered shifts, holidays and weekends and/or in emergency situations and to direct traffic/pedestrians crossing on school grounds when necessary; ability to investigate suspicious circumstances, persons, vehicles, etc.

Ability to work overtime including evenings, weekends and athletic events as assigned by the Director of Security to provide maximum security coverage; must be able to work in inclement weather and able to walk, run, climb, crawl or sit for extended periods of time.

Must be able to demonstrate the ability to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issues that arise on campus; must be able to effectively communicate with both public and school personnel; extensive communications (verbal and written) with students, faculty/staff and internal/external stakeholders is required; will be responsible for managing behavior of victims, witnesses and others when handling or responding to incidents; requires the use of sound judgment; ability to work with students and adults.

Proficiency in technology including word processing, emails and other office equipment such as incident reporting software, cctv security camera systems, emergency notification systems, alarm systems, access control systems, fax, copiers, and scanners.
