Lower School Science Teacher

St. Mark’s seeks a Lower School Science Teacher with a passion for developing curiosity and an early interest in science concepts through hands-on lab experiences. The ideal candidate will work effectively as a member of the science content team and with the grade-level teachers to plan all aspects of the Lower School science program. As a member of the Lower School faculty, the science teacher will report to the Head of the Lower School and is responsible for maintaining an engaging science classroom environment and assessing and reporting the progress of the students. 

Primary Functions: 

  • Understands and can implement a STEAM-based approach to science learning with current methods and materials
  • Teach science as a core subject to 3rd and 4th grade with concept lessons and lab-based experiences
  • Teach science with a lab experience approach for grades Pre-K through 2nd grade
  • Establish positive and supportive relationships with each student and family
  • Understand and apply assessment-based instruction
  •  Communicate science goals, student learning, and classroom activities to parents
  • Be a contributing member of the Lower School faculty through curriculum committee work and the ongoing work of the division
  • Be a contributing member of the Pre-K through 8th-grade science content team through planning and implementing an aligned science program for the school

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Science, Early Childhood, or Elementary Education 
  • A deep understanding of educating the whole child
  • A passion for teaching and learning 
  • A collaborative spirit 
  • A personal commitment to professional growth 
  • A minimum of three years of teaching science as a grade-level teacher or as a science specialist 
  • Genuine affinity for working with children and families in a highly engaged community 

Other Duties:

  • Participate in school meetings and parent conferences
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs
  • Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources, and methods and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
  • Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities
  • Work directly with the faculty on instruction and planning
  • Regularly update curriculum on Atlas Curriculum Mapping program
  • Participate in and/or support student and parent activities designed to involve the faculty and staff
  • Provide materials for substitute teachers
  • Other responsibilities as assigned 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Works in a sometimes highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, and reach overhead
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled classroom environment
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
