Located six miles from Washington, D.C., St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School, a JK-12 Episcopal School, educates the whole child by tending to the academic, social, physical, and spiritual needs of each of our students. The Middle School Dean of Students is responsible for student life and citizenship on the Middle School campus. Central to our mission is the pursuit of “goodness as well as knowledge”. Supporting our students in their pursuit of goodness is the Dean’s highest priority. The Middle School has roughly 300 students on its own campus.
Mission and Leadership
Embrace the mission, philosophy, and culture of the school. Demonstrate alignment with the school’s core purpose, values, and strategic priorities.
Demonstrate visible, active leadership in the daily life of the school, including during the daily routines of arrival, dismissal, lunch, and break times as well as at major divisional and school functions and events such as those that occur beyond the school day.
Lead the division in the absence of the division director and assistant director.
Work collaboratively as a part of the divisional administration team to support students, parents, and faculty.
Provide leadership in advisory programming and execution.
School Community
Identify proactive approaches to keep our student community vibrant and welcoming while ensuring students are respected and celebrated for what they are and what they will be.
Create inclusive processes and make informed decisions based on community values and input.
Continue to develop the student life curriculum centered around the core values of the school which incorporates diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and social-emotional learning.
Initiate and lead proactive student life programming in partnership with the administrative team and faculty, including divisional community events (community meetings, assemblies, outside speakers and performers), advisory programming, clubs, and extracurriculars.
Communicate frequently with both faculty and parents about students’ experiences and the magic of middle school.
Provide input on small-scale modifications or adjustments to the daily schedule.
Examples of Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
Oversees discipline, coordinating with the Middle School Director, Associate Dean, and Head of School on violations of major school rules. The Dean plays a central role in annually evaluating and updating the Student-Parent Handbook.
Collaborates regularly with the Middle School counselor, administrative team, faculty, and chaplain to support student social/emotional needs.
Manages the planning and implementation of Mini-Courses, in coordination with the faculty Mini-Course leader. Create overnight trip groups and rooming assignments.
Creates advisory groups along with the Middle School Counselor.
Partners with the Middle School Counselor to create the Saints Advisory Program (SAP) and develop philosophy, curriculum, and programming for our Saints Advisory Program, which is core to the Middle School experience.
Partners with Faculty advisor to the Student Council. Help with holding elections, conducting regular meetings, and planning and organizing events (Saints Got Talent, spring BBQ, pep rallies, etc.)
Manages Lunchtime clubs in collaboration with student and faculty leaders.
Oversees all student events such as the Thanksgiving Service, Awards Day, and Saints Mission Day; this includes planning logistics and transportation.
Provides supervision and a visible presence on campus and at Middle School events, while helping to set a positive tone on campus.
Teaches one course.
Conducts other duties as necessary.
Qualifications / Experience
The successful candidate will have:
A Bachelor’s Degree
A minimum of five years of experience as a teacher and a leader in schools
A demonstrated passion for working with Middle School students and positively supporting students in their unique journeys through the Middle School years
Recent DEIB experience and training fostering an inclusive community and equitable school environment
Demonstrated success in building relationships with parents
A track record of working effectively and collaboratively with faculty and administrators
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree
Ability to elevate the elation levels and attitudes for individuals, small teams, and groups.
Can work independently with purpose and intention but thrives making people better by “yes, and…”ing.
Knows that small wins are to culture as boo is to yah.
