About the Cathedral and the Cathedral School

The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, is a landmark of worship, arts, and prophetic witness in the heart of New York City. Overview

The Cathedral seeks an accomplished priest to serve as Priest Associate for Community Life and School Chaplain. This role unites two vital ministries: nurturing the spiritual and pastoral life of the Cathedral School and fostering a culture of belonging and shared discipleship within the Cathedral’s worshipping community.

Reporting to the Vicar, the Priest Associate provides collaborative leadership in worship, formation, and pastoral care, advancing the Cathedral’s vocation as an international center of faith.

Responsibilities

As Priest Associate for Community Life

  • Coordinate baptism and confirmation programs for all ages, collaborating with lay and clergy teams to integrate families into the liturgical and communal life of the Cathedral.

  • Design and oversee a strategic hospitality process that welcomes visitors and provides clear, intentional pathways for seekers to move into active membership.

  • Develop and support opportunities for adult formation and ongoing spiritual and intellectual growth, in partnership with the clergy team.

  • Participate in the liturgical life of the Cathedral.

As School Chaplain

  • Lead the School’s worship and religious education, planning and preaching at chapels and creating age-appropriate opportunities for prayer, service, and reflection.

  • Provide pastoral care and spiritual support for students, faculty, staff, families, and alumni.

  • Partner with School leadership to integrate Episcopal identity and values into the School’s culture, curriculum, and daily programs.

  • Represent the Cathedral and the Episcopal Church in the life of the School.

Qualifications

  • Priest ordained in the Episcopal Church, with at least 5–7 years of experience in parish ministry, chaplaincy, or related leadership.

  • Demonstrated excellence in preaching, teaching, and liturgical leadership.

  • Proven capacity to serve in complex institutions and diverse urban communities.

  • Strong skills in program development, volunteer leadership, and community-building.

  • Pastoral sensitivity, spiritual maturity, and a collaborative spirit.

  • Experience in school ministry and with children and youth strongly preferred.

Position Details

This is a full-time position, shared between the Cathedral and the Cathedral School. The Priest Associate reports to the Vicar of the Cathedral. For school-related duties, the Priest Associate collaborates with and is accountable to the Head of School.

The schedule follows the rhythm of the School year and the Cathedral’s liturgical calendar, with evening and weekend commitments expected.

Compensation

$75,000 to $90,000 per annum, commensurate with experience, with Cathedral housing provided.
