Religion and Philosophy Instructor

St. Andrew's School
Middletown, DE United States

St. Andrew’s School develops the independence, character, mind, and spirit of its students to prepare them for lives of citizenship, service, and purpose. All our students live, learn, and play in the natural beauty of our 2,200-acre campus. At the center of our community are curious, motivated, and diverse students who are accepted without regard to their families’ means. Each young person is challenged and valued, and students are truly known by the life-long mentors who teach, coach, and advise them. Human connection, face to face, is the foundation of our program. Friendship and joy define our spirit; “faith and learning” is our motto. To learn more about St. Andrew’s visit our website at www.standrews-de.org.

The St. Andrew’s Religion & Philosophy Department seeks to support and challenge students as they engage deep questions of belief, meaning, identity, and ethics. Every student arrives with a developing set of religious, spiritual, and moral commitments; our teaching honors those commitments while also preparing students to live thoughtfully in a diverse world where beliefs are tested, refined, and sometimes transformed. In our classrooms, students encounter a wide range of religious and philosophical traditions and viewpoints. We cultivate a learning atmosphere grounded in mutual respect and explicit discussion norms, recognizing that students may explore positions provisionally as part of intellectual growth.

Our courses emphasize close reading and careful interpretation of primary texts. We value the voices of thinkers historically excluded from dominant conversations and intentionally incorporate underrepresented and marginalized perspectives. We also extend learning beyond the classroom through engagement with visiting scholars and faith leaders, as well as experiences in local houses of worship and communities of practice. We assess students primarily on their ability to analyze ideas with sophistication, empathy, and intellectual honesty, not on whether they adopt a particular worldview. As a department, we collaborate closely: revising curriculum, sharing resources, observing one another’s teaching, and pursuing ongoing professional development as teachers and scholars.

The position will also involve full participation in the extracurricular and student life programs of this residential community.
