Job Description:  School Chaplain

The School Chaplain position is a non-exempt, hourly position.  The Chaplain reports to the Head of School.  In all of its various facets, the School Chaplain exercises the utmost discretion and honors confidentiality in all matters. As an employee of The Gooden School, the School Chaplain shall ensure that the school motto, “Respect for self, Respect for Others and Respect for the World,” is adhered to in all areas of school life.

This job description provides a general outline of duties and responsibilities. The position entails a variety of responsibilities, listed but not limited to the following, as well as any others assigned by the Head of School: 

Worship:

  • In consultation and collaboration with the Head of School, the Rector of Ascension Parish, and others, plans, conducts, and oversees developmentally appropriate chapel services and communion services as scheduled on the school calendar
  • Works with the Head of School, and as appropriate, the Rector of Ascension Parish to plan, conduct, and oversee developmentally-appropriate graduation and promotion services and any other related programs, celebrations, and services
  • Supervises Student Chaplains
  • Maintains and encourages regular prayer for those in the school community

Pastoral Care:

  • Counsels students, school parents, and faculty, as requested and needed
  • Provides pastoral and sacramental care to school community 
  • As requested and available, calls on community members in the hospital

Education:

  • Visits TK-8 classrooms on a rotating basis as per the agreed-upon schedule for the school year
  • In collaboration with the Head of School and others, develops age-appropriate character education curriculum for the classroom visits 
  • Participates, as requested and available, in faculty meetings and all-school events
  • As requested, teaches the Faith and Ethics classes in Middle School

Other:

  • As appropriate, participates in NAES and diocesan conventions, events, and meetings as an advocate and representative of the school and school ministry in general
  • Represents The Gooden School to the Commission on Schools in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles
  • As requested, meets with classes when special concerns arise
  • Regularly meets with the Head of School, Director of Episcopal Identity and Community Engagement, Music Director, and others to plan:
    • Chapel Service Themes
    • Liturgy for each season
    • All-school Eucharists
    • School Community concerns – Chaplain follow-up requested
    • Special events such as Chalk for Peace, Lessons and Carols, Grandparents Day Chapel, Promotions, Graduation, and any other related programs, celebrations, and services
    • Character Education themes for the school
    • Faith and Ethics Curriculum for Middle School

This part-time position for the 2026-2027 school year requires approximately 15–20 hours per week. Compensation is $30–$40 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for spiritual guidance and community engagement while supporting The Gooden School’s mission and values.
