POSITION: Fine Arts Teacher (1-year replacement, full time faculty)

DESCRIPTIONSt. Paul’s School Fine Arts program is seeking a teacher of Hot Glass for a one-year teaching position. Experience in other two- and three-dimensional design disciplines such as ceramics, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, digital media are also welcome. Position to begin duties in August of 2023.

RESPONSIBILITIES: This position requires a desire to embrace the Fine Arts model at St. Paul’s School, which includes a primary focus on the artist as instructor. Courses in the studio arts work from a foundation built on a thorough technical introduction to a given medium followed by project-based exercises that meet students’ particular creative endeavors. The Fine Arts program and the physical arrangements of the studio spaces are designed to encourage exploration of the artistic process between media. Instructors are encouraged to use their own work as part of a curriculum. A connection to the School’s newly renovated Crumpacker Gallery allows teachers to arrange for exhibits of work that will augment a particular course offering. Each instructor will be required to participate in a biennial Fine Arts Faculty exhibit.

The faculty member will teach four sections of Hot Glass. Students will meet with the instructor during the academic day as well as scheduled evening studio hours. Knowledge and experience in running, maintenance and supervision of the hot glass shop, cold shop, welding studio and all equipment are required for this position. Faculty members in the Fine Arts Program value collegiality; candidates for a Fine Arts position must be willing to work closely with a team of teachers. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher)
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of experience in glassblowing required
  • Proficient in hot and cold working processes
  • A minimum of 2 years teaching experience in hot glass
  • Experience working with students in both a cold shop and hot shop environment is strongly recommended
  • Experience with metal work and welding
  • Lively interest in current pedagogy and scholarship
  • As part of residential boarding school, the candidate must be interested in working with adolescents.
