Upper School Learning Commons Librarian

St. Andrew’s in Austin, TX, seeks a highly qualified Learning Commons Librarian to start in August 2023.  The Learning Commons Librarian should be interested in supporting and building an inclusive, student-centered space and program that helps prepare the entire community for the opportunities and challenges of the information age.

Situated at the heart of the 166-acre Upper School Campus on Southwest Parkway, the 3300-square-foot space encompasses the main space, the quiet study room, and the private office and storage room. Light-flooded and open-concept, the Learning Commons is abuzz with students and teachers throughout the school day. The next Learning Commons Librarian will be a crucial contributor to the school’s academic and social development of our students. The primary assignment will be in the Upper School, but there are opportunities to work with the K12 library and technology teams.


1) A master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the field of library and information studies.

2) Preferred candidates will hold a School librarian certification.

3) Preferred candidates will have two years of classroom teaching experience from a public or accredited private school.

4) Prior high school library experience is preferable.

Job goals:

1) To ensure that students are ethical and effective users and creators of ideas and information; 2) to empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and savvy uses of information; 3) to promote intellectual curiosity in all and ensure access to information and ideas; 4) to collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons and units of instruction, integrate information literacy skills at the point of need, and assess student learning and instructional effectiveness; 5) to develop a contemporary and engaging library program based on current research and student interest; and 6) to provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library program is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the School and is an integral component of teaching and learning.

Additional duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintain and continue to develop the library’s physical and digital materials collections and databases.
  • Maintain and continue to develop the library’s web presence, including virtual access to information resources and library services that extend the learning day and physical space.
  • Create and maintain the school library space as a teaching and learning environment that is inviting, safe, flexible, and conducive to student learning and community building.
  • Provide training to faculty, staff, and students on new and existing information systems and digital resources.
  • Implement mission appropriate to state and national standards for school libraries.
  • Stay current on effective practices in building information literacy skills and competencies through reading journals, and online periodicals, interacting with social media learning communities and attending to professional development.
  • Supervise support staff, which may include an assistant, parent volunteers, and student assistants.
  • Prepare, justify, and administer the school library program budget to support specific program goals.
  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students.
  • Serve on committees and perform other duties as assigned by Head of School and Head of Upper School.

The Learning Commons Librarian position is a full-time, academic-year faculty position. The Learning Commons Librarian ordinarily works additional days following the close of school and before the start of the next academic year to complete library tasks and prepare for the school’s opening and new student/staff orientation and professional training as needed. Salary is competitive, faculty compensation is based on educational attainment and experience.
