In Memoriam: The Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal

The National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES) joins the larger Episcopal Church community in mourning the passing of the Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal, former member of the NAES Governing Board and ninth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio, who entered into eternal rest on May 14, 2026 at the age of 75.

Bishop Breidenthal’s life was defined by intellectual depth, faithful leadership, and an unwavering commitment to both the Church and to Episcopal education. Before his time as bishop, his ministry spanned roles as the John Henry Hobart Professor of Christian Ethics and Moral Theology at The General Theological Seminary in New York City, and later as dean of religious life at Princeton University. Notably, much earlier in his career he served as senior chaplain at Harvard School (now Harvard-Westlake School) in North Hollywood, CA.

Those who had the privilege of serving alongside Bishop Breidenthal on the NAES Governing Board remember him as a leader of exceptional wisdom, steady guidance, and tremendous generosity of spirit. He possessed a rare, particular grace in conversation; he was someone who often listened more than he spoke, yet consistently offered the exact perspective needed at just the right moment, inviting everyone around him to reflect more deeply.

Across Episcopal schools nationwide, we hold his memory in the highest possible regard. We give thanks for his life of service, his profound theological insight, and his immense gifts as an author and poet.

With gratitude for his life and ministry, we commend Bishop Breidenthal to God’s eternal care. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Margaret, Magdalene, Lucy, the people of the Diocese of Southern Ohio, and all who loved him.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant Thomas. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.
