NAES Names 50th Anniversary Campaign Funds for George Andrews and Peter Cheney

The National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES) is pleased to announce that it has named its Endowment for Chaplaincy Development for the Rev. George E. Andrews II (far left) and its Fund for Leadership and Governance for the Rev. Peter G. Cheney (left). Both of these newly established funds are part of the NAES 50th Anniversary Gathering Fund campaign, which seeks to raise $1,000,000 in support of the association’s programs and services.

“We are thrilled to honor the extraordinary leadership of George and Peter in the naming of these funds,” said the Rev. Daniel R. Heischman, NAES Executive Director. “The widespread support for and gifts to these efforts given in honor of these two people is a testament to their influence and the impact of their ministries with Episcopal schools and NAES.”

The Rev. George E. Andrews II Endowment for Chaplaincy Development

Interest income will uphold the importance of school chaplaincy in the church’s ministry through new chaplains orientation and mentoring, an online chaplain’s course, and funds for chaplain attendance at NAES programs. Mr. Andrews is a past president and member of the NAES Governing Board and was headmaster of Saint Andrew’s School, Boca Raton, Florida (1989–2007) and St. George’s School, Middletown, Rhode Island. The Endowment was named in response to the generosity of Mr. Andrew’s friends in both the Saint Andrew’s community and throughout the country.

Said Mr. Andrews of this honor, “In 2 Corinthians 5:20, Paul writes, ‘Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making his appeal through us.’ This statement by Paul captures for me the  most important ministry our school chaplains have in the life of our Episcopal school communities—to be the channels through which God’s love is expressed and shared with all members! It is a privilege to support through programs and prayer the wonderful ministry of school chaplains in the life of our beloved Episcopal schools.”

The Rev. Peter G. Cheney Fund for Leadership and Governance

This fund will nurture future leadership of Episcopal schools through institutes for aspiring and new heads, webinars, and annual spiritual retreats for school heads. Mr. Cheney was the executive director of NAES from 1998 to 2007. Currently a trustee of St. Paul’s School, Concord, New Hampshire, lead gifts from his trustee colleagues and St. Paul’s School inspired the naming of the fund.

Said Mr. Cheney, “You could have knocked me over with a feather when I learned that the Leadership and Governance Fund had been named in my honor, and I am particularly grateful for my friends and fellow trustees at St. Paul’s School who initiated this award. My work and affiliation with my colleagues on the staff and board at NAES, along with Episcopal school heads, chaplains and trustees in the Association, has been inspiring and gratifying, as, together, we seek to foster the spiritual, moral and intellectual development of children and young people.”

Celebrating this legacy and looking toward a thriving future, supporters are invited to join the 50th anniversary celebrations by:
