Call for Papers
The National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES) invites educators, scholars, theologians, and practitioners to submit papers exploring the diverse dimensions of Episcopal identity within our schools. Focusing on the four pillars of Episcopal identity, this conference aims to deepen our collective understanding of how Episcopal values and traditions inform educational practices and foster flourishing communities.

Submission Timeline
- Call for Papers Opens: June 1, 2025
- Abstract Submission Deadline: January 9, 2026
- Notification of Acceptance: May 31, 2026
- Full Paper Submission Deadline: May 31, 2027
- Conference Dates: November 10–12, 2027
Thematic Tracks
Papers will focus on one of the four “pillars of Episcopal identity” in our schools:
- Worship: Exploration of liturgical practices, chapel programs, prayer traditions, and spirituality through worship in Episcopal schools
- Community: Approaches to creating caring, inclusive, and diverse communities that honor the dignity of every person in alignment with Episcopal values
- Religious Formation: Educational practices that develop religious literacy, theological understanding, ethical reasoning, and spiritual growth as expressed by the Episcopal tradition
- Social Justice: Embodying Episcopal commitments to human dignity, peace, and justice through service learning, advocacy, and engagement with contemporary social issues
Submission Guidelines
Abstract Submission
- Abstracts should be 500-1000 words that summarize the thesis and methodology for the paper
- Include 3-5 keywords
- Indicate preferred thematic track
- Include author information: name, institution, position, email, and brief bio of the author(s)
- Papers may have up to three authors
- Submit as a PDF document through the submission form (a gmail account is required—click here to create one)
- To aid the reviewal process, the PDF must include all of the information above in addition to the abstract
- Your file name should be in the format of: LastName(s)-AbstractTitle.pdf
Full Paper Submission (upon acceptance of abstract)
- Papers should be 3,000-5,000 words (excluding references)
- Follow Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition
- Include an abstract and keywords
- Upload as a Word document (.docx) through the link to be provided in your acceptance email
- Include any necessary tables, figures, or appendices
Review Process
All submissions will undergo a peer review process by the Conference Submission Committee. Papers will be evaluated based on:
- Relevance to conference themes and Episcopal identity
- Scholarly rigor and theological depth
- Innovation and contribution to the field
- Clarity and organization
- Practical applications for Episcopal schools
Presentation Format
All accepted papers will be presented within their respective Thematic Track time block. The presentation format includes:
- Individual Presentations: Each author will present their work to all Summit participants during a 30-45 minute session
- Panel Discussions: Each author will also participate in a 45-minute panel discussion with other presenters from the same Thematic Track
- Q&A Component: Panel discussions will include a question and answer session where all Summit participants can engage with presenters
This format ensures that each author has dedicated time to present their work in depth while also participating in collaborative discussions that explore connections between papers within the same thematic area.
Publication Opportunity
Selected papers may be invited for publication in Reasons For Being: The Culture and Character of Episcopal Schools, 3rd Edition. Authors should indicate their agreement to publication during the submission process.

Conference Registration
Authors of accepted papers must register for the conference by the published deadline to secure their place in the program. Registration information will be provided with acceptance notifications. Authors will have access to a discounted registration fee as well as access to the negotiated room rate at the host hotel. Authors will be responsible for all travel expenses in connection with the event.
