ChapToR 2012: Fear and Faithfulness—Ministering to Communities in Transition

Thursday, February 16 - Saturday, February 18, 2012

Hilton Austin Airport

Austin, TX 78719

Trying to be bold yet staying cautious. This is one of the strange and paradoxical symptoms of our culture. On the one hand, we are told to “go for it;” on the other hand, we know that the world can be unsafe, unpredictable, and misleading in its allure, “so be careful out there!” This combination is also reflected in our school communities: how many mission statements speak of the desire for students to take risks and, at the same time, how many of our families value, above all, the safety that we represent to them and provide for them?

It is a tension we need to consider and understand (albeit not resolve) better. With the guidance of Scott Bader-Saye, Ph.D., the Helen and Everett H. Jones Professor of Christian Ethics and Moral Theology at the Seminary of the Southwest (and author of Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear), participants will explore this tension between risk and safety, as those who minister in our schools during times of transition juggle the gospel imperative to lose our lives while working with the cultural craving for a place of safety, something so many of our schools represent.

ChapToR is cosponsored by the Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education.

Who Should Attend:

This conference is designed for independent school and Episcopal school chaplains and teachers of religion.

Tips for Making the Case for Attending ChapToR 2012:
Many travel budgets and training budgets have been cut, and some schools are experiencing severe financial problems. This means that regardless of the merits of a conference, you may need to justify the expense when in previous years you may not have had to do so. So here are some things you might want to consider:

  • Communicate to your head of school what topics will be discussed and what you will specifically bring back as the return for the investment.
  • Offer to prepare and deliver a short presentation and Q&A session with your colleagues to share what you learned. This way others in your school will get the benefits of your attendance, too.
  • Share the syllabus and speaker handouts with your colleagues. As an attendee, you have unlimited access to materials posted by speakers.
  • Be ready with a plan that shows who will cover for you while you are attending ChapToR.
We look forward to seeing in Austin.
