ChapToR 2009

Thursday, February 5 - Saturday, February 7, 2009

The Desmond Tutu Center
The General Theological Seminary
180 Tenth Avenue
New York 10011

ChapToR is NAES' annual conference and retreat for Episcopal school chaplains and teachers of religion.

The Rev. Paula Lawrence Wehmiller, author, educator, Episcopal priest, and visiting scholar in communities of faith, service and learning, will join the Rev. Daniel R. Heischman, NAES Executive Director in leading our annual conference and retreat, as we gather for a time of recollection, discovery, reflection, and spiritual refreshment, awakening the stories of reconciliation and healing that, amidst the demands of the job, help us to hear the deeper call of our vocation. Exploring themes such as mindfulness, pacing, and self-care that cultivate and sustain balance in the life of those who care for the soul of the school, we will have opportunities to explore...

  • The spiritual practice of Sabbath keeping: looking beyond the clamor for rest to seeking solidarity with those who cannot work.
  • The spiritual practice of remembering: our stories as the seed of our call to do this work.
  • The spiritual practice of finding lost sheep: how looking for the outsider, the hurt, the troubled and bringing them back into the fold also calls us back from the confines of the "job" to the gift of our vocation.
  • The spiritual practice of play: free time in the Big Apple
  • The spiritual practice of gratitude: listening for and being nourished by the diversity of expressions of God's gifts as the community gathered practices its transformative and life-giving role in leading out the hidden wholeness which is at the heart of learning and teaching, justice and peace.
The conference begins at 4:00 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, February 5, 2009, and concludes shortly after lunch on Saturday, February 7, 2009.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE).
