Job Description: Preschool Director of St. Matthew’s Preschool, Bedford, NY 

As an educational leader, the director is expected to create a vision for the preschool inline with our mission.   The curriculum should be emergent and responsive to the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of individual children and the student group. In addition to preparing each child for educational progression to kindergarten, the director should also establish programming to support the social and emotional growth of children.

SMPS is looking for a compassionate and experienced educator to lead the 2024-2025 school year. The Director is responsible for leading all educational and administrative aspects of the school.

As head of the preschool, it is the director’s responsibility to establish a culture that is welcoming, inclusive, collaborative, with high ethical standards of respect with open communication.

Reports: Rector and Preschool Commission Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Model the values and mission of St. Matthew’s Church and Preschool in the curriculum, policies and working
  • Create curricula (play-based and emergent) and standards that support creativity, best practices and age-appropriate
  • Support teachers with curriculum, class management, assessment, training, challenging learning styles and behavioral concerns.
  • Oversee the daily operation of the preschool to ensure that classrooms, activities, and curriculum reflect the school’s philosophy.
  • Supplement the curricula with weekly special offerings, i.e. music,
  • Plan professional development activities for
  • Prepare the school calendar including special events, celebrations and parent
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and parents to support open and frequent communications about the activities and progress of their
  • Educate families about school philosophy, policies, procedures, and appropriate milestones of child development.
  • Recruit, train, manage, and lead school personnel.
  • Represent and promote the school within the communities we serve, with a strong focus on recruiting new students.
  • Manage the yearly registration process, social media and website.
  • Collaborate to set the annual budget, including setting the tuition, for approval of the Preschool
  • Ensure the school is operating in alignment with its financial responsibilities.
  • Work to ensure that all administrative functions are happening in a timely manner.
  • Work with the church staff to coordinate events and church Chaplain to coordinate weekly chapel services.
  • Oversee the building and property to keep the environment/school safe, clean and attractive.
  • Ensure that the preschool facilities are well-maintained and safe for children and oversee the use of the facilities and grounds of the church consistent with its guidelines.
  • Work closely with and actively support the parents’ association.

Job Requirements: 

  • Education: Preferably master’s degree in early childhood education or equivalent, but consideration is given to exceptional
  • Experience: minimum of 3 years as Director or Assistant Director (see above).
  • CPR and First Aid
  • Proficient in Word and Excel, with an aptitude for technology.
  • Start: July/August 2024 for fall
