Middle School Physical Education Teacher and Coach (2024-2025)

Position Description:

The Physical Education program is a sequential, cumulative program aimed at challenging each student regardless of physical ability. Fundamental, age-appropriate motor skills and concepts are progressively taught and refined and combined into more specific sport skills. Sportsmanship, teamwork, awareness of safety rules, and developing an active, healthy lifestyle are stressed in all areas of the physical education curriculum.

We are looking for someone with the energy, enthusiasm, experience, knowledge, and creativity to continue to move our wonderful program forward. He or she must enjoy and be comfortable working with middle school students and adults. A degree in physical education is preferred. We are also looking for candidates with experience teaching health. This position entails teaching Middle School (6th grade) classes and coaching for the middle and upper school athletics program.

All members of the faculty instill our school’s mission by helping their students to become responsible, honest, compassionate, respectful citizens. The successful candidate will be required to exercise professional judgment and responsibility in keeping with the expectations of the school’s faculty.

Responsibilities

Provide a safe and stimulating environment that facilitates learning.
Maintain a palpably strong commitment to educating a diverse student body within a caring and creative environment through equitable and inclusive teaching practices, curricula, and programming.
Develop, plan, and implement the curriculum through daily lessons.
Differentiate for individual students based on their unique learning needs.
Ensure all students are appropriately engaged and challenged.
Manage classroom behavior.
Respond promptly to communication from colleagues and parents.
Maintain records of each student’s progress.
Report student progress to parents through a trimester narrative report card.
Collaborate with grade-level teams to enhance teaching and learning.
Attend and participate in meetings of all committees joined.
Attend and participate in regular faculty meetings and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Coaching Requirement of 3 middle school sports seasons and 2 upper school sports seasons as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

The School accepts candidates with the following minimal qualifications:

(1) Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or another relevant field; advanced degrees are strongly encouraged; state certification is not required.

(2) At least 3 years of experience as a head varsity or assistant varsity coach – basketball coaching preferred.

(3) A strong commitment to educating a diverse student body within a caring and creative environment.

(4) A commitment to coaching 3 Middle School sports and 1 or 2 Upper School sports as assigned, with a preference for background in basketball.

(5) Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

(6) Previous teaching and/or coaching experience.

(7) Strong references who confirm the applicant’s ability to exercise sound professional judgment.
