Upper School History Instructor

Purpose: This full-time position involves teaching 4 sections of upper school history to students in grades 9-12. The ideal candidate is a passionate teacher, interested in building and implementing an innovative 21st Century interdisciplinary program, employing a variety of teaching tools and methodologies. As an effective member of the History Department, this individual is flexible and able to work independently, as well as collaboratively with colleagues. He/she is committed to developing and modifying curriculum to conform with best practices and student needs. The ability to teach a variety of history courses is expected, including a preference for World History and United States History. Experience teaching other content is a plus. Willingness to be a productive participant in the extracurricular life of the school is also required.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach 4 sections of Upper School History, delivering instruction aligned with ESD’s Statement of Educational Philosophy.
  • Provide integral and varied support, planning, oversight, and communication as a student advisor
  • Offer significant involvement and/or leadership in an extracurricular capacity as a club advisor or athletic coach.
  • Participate and engage in professional activities and gatherings at team, departmental, divisional, and school-wide levels.
  • Use appropriate technology in support of the curriculum of the twenty-first-century global classroom.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Work closely with colleagues on the school’s curricular initiatives

Abuse Risk Management Standards:

  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students.
  • Attends required abuse risk management training.
  • Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising students.
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.

Working Environment:

  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Generally 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing.
  • Minimal temperature variations.
  • Off-site travel to include rustic environments and occasional overnight trips.
  • Generally hazard-free environment.
