Be the Buffalo

Our Biennial Conference in San Antonio afforded us an opportunity to come together and reflect upon the importance of being “strong and courageous” in our work in Episcopal schools. As we reflected upon that theme over two and a half days, we also shared the joy of seeing old friends while making new ones in celebration of our shared mission. I left reinvigorated for our work together and I hope that you did, too!

During the sermon at the Holy Eucharist, I reflected upon the importance of approaching our work with strength and courage regardless of the storms we occasionally face. That’s the reality of all ministry that matters: there are always storms between moments of beautiful sunshine.

I shared how two different types of animals respond when they are threatened by bad weather. When a herd of cattle sense a storm, they turn away from it and run in the opposite direction. While that might seem to make sense, the result is that they actually spend more time in the rain! As great as cows are, they aren’t known for their speed and they aren’t able to “outrun” a storm despite their best efforts.

Contrast that with buffalo. A herd of buffalo respond differently. When they sense a storm, they face it and run towards it. The result is that they are “in the storm” for a shorter amount of time. Facing it, as opposed to trying to outrun it, serves them better.

Both groups of animals sense the same danger, but respond in very different ways with very different results.

Being strong and courageous in our work will sometimes require us to face the storms in support of our mission of respecting the dignity of every human being. The good news is that we are never alone in this work. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we are a family of schools knit together to serve young people in a way that is pleasing to God. In so doing, we are creating a better world for all.
