Strengthening Episcopal Leadership Through Connection

Through a generous grant from the National Association of Episcopal Schools, our Head of School, Gigi Khalsa, and Board President, Anissa Ryland, where able to attend the NAES Biannual Conference in November 2024. This opportunity proved transformative for our school community in ways that continue to resonate months later.

Renewed Vision for Episcopal Identity
While attending the sessions, it was instructive and inspiring to witness the integration of Episcopal values in the many programs and policies discussed throughout the conference. The experience reinforced for both of us why our mission and Episcopal identity must remain at the center of every discussion and decision. We returned with concrete strategies to better articulate and elevate our Episcopal identity to all members of our community.

Community and Curriculum & Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice Initiatives
Having the opportunity to visit another early childhood program and engage with peer institutions was instrumental in strengthening communications surrounding our new strategic plan. These connections assisted us tremendously in shaping our work on community outreach and diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Hearing from DEI officers at other schools and experiencing Steve Pemberton’s moving and impactful keynote speech has empowered our efforts to launch our first-ever full scholarship program, enshrining our commitment to DEIJ principles in tangible action.

Stronger Governance Practices
Our Board President brought back governance models from peer Episcopal schools that have already strengthened our strategic planning process. Our board has since refined our committee structure to better support our mission and is working to establish clear pathways for faculty and community input in institutional decisions.

Expanded Networks
Perhaps most valuable were the connections formed with fellow Episcopal school leaders. These relationships have already yielded practical benefits, including guidance with participation in our church’s capital campaign and innovative ideas for expanding access to teacher training.

Looking Forward
The impact of this conference extends far beyond the three days our leaders spent in attendance. The renewed energy, expanded toolkit of resources, and strengthened network of colleagues have positioned our school to more fully embody our Episcopal identity while addressing the challenges presented by the current climate surrounding education and community support.

We extend our deepest gratitude to NAES for making this opportunity possible. The investment in our leadership has truly been an investment in our entire school community.
