[St. Richard’s Episcopal School] St. Richard’s Episcopal School, Indianapolis, Indiana, has received the largest donation in its history to further the school’s goal of ensuring access to high quality values-based education, a tradition of the Indianapolis school since its founding in 1960.
The SunUp Foundation, founded by a retired Princeton University chemistry professor who invented one of Eli Lilly and Company’s top selling drugs, announced its $3 million commitment to St. Richard’s Episcopal School in February. The St. Richard’s Episcopal School Foundation will receive three donations of $1 million each in 2012, 2013, and 2014. The first payment of $1 million has already been received by the school’s foundation.
Investment income from the donation will be used to fund need-based financial aid for qualified students admitted to the Indianapolis independent school for students age three through Grade eight.
Recipients of these new financial aid grants will be designated Taylor Scholars, in honor of Dr. Edward C. and Virginia C. Taylor. The Taylors and family members serve on the board of the SunUp Foundation, which is focused on projects in education, environment, public libraries and media.
“We are humbled by the trust the SunUp Foundation has demonstrated in our school and we are profoundly grateful to Ted and Ginnie Taylor and their family,” said Robert Marchesani, president of the St. Richard’s Episcopal School Board of Trustees.
“A lot of kids don’t have the chance to experience the extraordinarily supportive and stimulating educational and social environment found at St. Richard’s Episcopal School,” said Dr. Taylor.
“Our hope is that our gift for financial aid will make it possible for those children to have this experience, and then be ready to sail forth enriched with confidence, new ambitions and new abilities,” he added.
Dr. Taylor invented a chemical compound that Eli Lilly and Company licensed and developed into the drug ALIMTA® that is now one of the company’s top selling brands.
