Assistant Director of Outdoor Education

Purpose:  The Assistant Director of Outdoor Education supports the Director of Outdoor Education in all aspects of the program. The Assistant Director of Outdoor Education serves as the MS Division OE Coordinator and works closely with the other OE Coordinators, the Division Heads, grade level deans and team leaders.

Qualifications & Skills:
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Education, Environmental Education, Recreation, Outdoor Leadership or similar field preferred.
  • Experience working in education, outdoor camps, or higher education in an administrative position, preferably within an outdoor context considered ideal.
  • Positive interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and authentically with various constituencies of the school.
  • The ability and desire to work with K-12 age students
  • Experience leading groups of students, and teachers in a wilderness setting.
  • Experience designing experiential education curriculum and programs.
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for working in small leadership teams and working in and directing collaborative student and staff groups.
  • Ability to engage in extensive physical activities necessary to lead and participate in wilderness trips, including maintaining and moving outdoor equipment, lifting 50 pounds and traveling by foot over varied terrain.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and Google platform.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Accounting and budget skills.
  • Ability to work with hand tools.
  • Wilderness First Aid Certification required, and preferred Wilderness First Responder.
  • Ropes course, climbing and water activity certified, or willingness to obtain. 
  • Valid driver’s license, CDL preferred with no more than 2 moving violations during the last 3 years, and no serious driving convictions in the last 5 years in accordance with College insurance requirements.
Essential Functions:
Provide instruction on all outdoor education trips

  • Construct, set-up, and dismantle all equipment as needed
  • Purchase supplies for each excursion
  • Provide Classroom support for teachers before and after trips
  • Assist the Director to ensure that the scope and sequence of the outdoor education program is in step with each division and that the outdoor education curriculum aligns with the school’s mission.

Facilitate community and team building exercises within the outdoor education curriculum, as well as assessing each trip with the Director.

Administer all aspects of the Outdoor Education program within the Division.

  • Provide students with opportunities for experiential, adventure, and recreational education in an outdoor setting involving the various disciplines which are offered at the Episcopal School of Dallas, including Math, Science, History, English, Foreign Language, Fine Arts, and Physical Education.
    • Oversee the creation, planning, scheduling, and instruction of outdoor education programs for the respective grades in their division, in all aspects of the school’s curriculum.
    • Provided an alternate learning environment for students.
    • Implement activities that develop awareness of community and the natural world.
    • Make sure the division program is in balance with programs in other divisions and provides hands-on learning and community bonding opportunities to each student.
  • Communicate with faculty, administration, students, parents, and the school community on all facets of the Outdoor Education program of their respective division.
    • Coordinate with classroom teachers and division heads to make sure Outdoor Education programs relate to the curriculum and the mission and goals of each division.
    • Work with faculty and administration to incorporate outdoor education the curriculum and provide classroom support for teachers before and after trips.
    • Work closely with the Director of Outdoor Education, the other Division Coordinators and the three Division Heads in planning and coordinating a long range strategic plan and in executing and evaluating programming that supports the strategic plan and ESD’s Mission.
  • Be available to provide assistance to the other division coordinators as needed.
    • Teach Outdoor Education to students of other Divisions as needed
  • Be a daily presence within the school community both onsite and offsite.
    • Provide assistance with Advisory, Community Service and Field Trips as required. 
    • Morning quarry watch with the Science Team. 
    • Attend chapel and other daily student-centered activities.
  • Identify opportunities to stimulate interdepartmental curricular and student engagement and foster partnerships and collaborations with local organizations and entities.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
