Hours: 7:45 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. with additional hours as needed to fulfill after school coaching/activity responsibilities as assigned

Reports to: Head of Upper School and Upper School Librarian

Position Summary:

St. Christopher’s School, the largest all-boys school in Virginia and one of the largest and oldest boys’ schools in the Mid-Atlantic region, seeks a long-term substitute in its Upper School Library to begin on or around August 19, 2024.

Serving approximately 1,000 boys in Grades JK-12 in Richmond, Virginia, St. Christopher’s is an Episcopal school committed to cultivating a community that is diverse, inclusive and welcoming. The ideal candidate is a dynamic and collaborative educator who can help students and faculty achieve the School’s academic mission through the various functions, services, and opportunities provided through its Memorial Library.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Advocates for and provides a welcoming space for inquiry, collaboration, and quiet study for the Upper School community.
  • Assists in maintaining the print and digital collections including cataloging, processing, shelving, circulation, and weeding.
  • Assists Upper School Librarian in managing physical space of the library and oversees library when Upper School Librarian is teaching.
  • Assists in providing reference services to students and faculty.
  • Efficiently utilizes library technology and is comfortable with troubleshooting and sending support requests when needed.
  • Assists Upper School Librarian in supporting a robust school reading culture through regularly scheduled, boy-friendly book clubs, engaging displays, programming, and activities as well as reader advisory.
  • Provides basic technology support, including setting up and maintaining printers and troubleshooting laptop issues.
  • Communicates and interacts with library faculty and staff from across the school in an appropriate and effective professional manner.
  • Executes other duties (study halls, class coverage, etc.) as assigned.

  • Working toward or holds an MLIS or MLS from an ALA accredited program
  • Has experience with library management systems and discovery services
  • Possesses a love for reading and is able to engage boys in pursuing a lifelong love of reading
  • Possesses excellent problem solving, communication, analytic, and customer service skills
  • Has a growth mindset, be creative and flexible, and demonstrate a sense of humor
  • Has experience working in education and enjoy working with young people, especially boys

Physical Requirements:

  • Is able to perform light physical duties including cleaning and dusting of library spaces and moving and shelving of books
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, and stoop for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to circulate among students in a classroom setting
  • Must be able to move from classroom to classroom and from building to building as assigned or required by classroom assignment and activity of the day
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
