SDEDS Refocuses Its Episcopal Values

St. David’s Episcopal Day School in Wayne, PA strives to start off a child’s educational journey grounded in Episcopal values from the very beginning. Our student population is made up of children from 18 months to 6 years. Each month we focus on a different core value to instill on the children as it is interwoven into their learning and play. Through the Ann Mellow Fund grant, Head of School Margaret Biester was able to attend the biennial conference in San Antonio, TX in November of 2022. As a new school only in its 5th year of operation the opportunity to connect with other Episcopal preschools and learn about shared experiences these schools have was an opportunity that would not have been possible without the help of NAES. For 2 years during the pandemic the school’s focus shifted to staying afloat and keeping everyone healthy. After the conference, with a renewed sense of purpose, the school shifted its focus back on its Episcopal identity. The ideas shared at the conference about social justice and making it accessible to even the youngest of our generation drove the school to initiate a DEIJ bookshelf. On this movable cart that can travel to all of the classrooms is a selection of books celebrating our differences through race, gender and more. In a time when books are being banned from schools, it is a true blessing to educate the youngest in our community to be courageous and strong in the face of adversity.
